Of course sometimes the creator just gives up, which is frustrating as hell. One of my favorites from a few years ago was Otherworld by Phil Jimenez (writing and art). It was the best mix of hard sci-fi and fantasy I think I've seen. It literally read like the Matrix vs. Lord of the Rings, and which side seemed to be the villain pretty much changed issue to issue. But the thing was solicited as a 12 issue maxi series, 7 issues came out and then we were left with "Continued in Volume 2!" Volume 2 hasn't been heard of to this day. Sad when good ideas go nowhere, but I think that one was derailed when Jimenez was pulled for Infinite Crisis. Sigh.

Yes, but superheroes seem to dominate ONLY the american market, french market seems to be mostly fantasy and funnybooks (at least judging from what is translated where I live, might be absolutely wrong) while being large enough to offer some space for any other genre (and for translations from all over the world. There are also format differences, I'll give an example of US and Poland. US market = monthlies that are later collected in trades; almost entirely created for this market. Polish market = mostly trades, graphic novels and large anthologies, but consisting mostly of translations. "Local" comics are kinda rare, and there isn't really much of a chance in making any money from publishing something. There are no monthlies either, there's couple of irregulars (unless you mean manga, completed series are reprinted here at pace ranging from two volumes a month to one volume quarterly).

So Sci-Fi comics seem to be doing fairly well in magazines (whether 2000 AD or Heavy Metal), but not so great as regular comic books. Although I think fantasy does even better in Europe.

...and I shall stop here, this post is a jumbled mess as it is, lol.

Nah mate, superheroes dominate Australia too, and probably the UK as well. There are indy voices (though truth be told other than haltingly distributed local stuff most of it comes from America) and the growing manga presence, but spandex dominates here as well. It seems to be a phenomenon of mono-lingual English speaking countries.

Hmm, we only get Slaine and Judge Dredd from time to time, so that and few issues of 2000 AD is all I know from british comics.

I'd hazard a guess and say that's what most brits know about british comics, if anything at all. Superman, Spiderman, Batman. Tintin, Asterix and newspaper funnies are what's known in these here parts. Maybe a little V for Vendetta and Sin City now as well.
